Ah Choo!

I’m sick… again. My nose is like a leaky faucet. My eyes have that glazed “I feel like crap” look. There’s pressure in my sinuses. I feel like I can’t hear, smell, or breathe. I’m fatigued and my head is a little foggy.

Whenever I’m under the weather the first thing I do is wonder where I went wrong: Did I forget to wash my hands after touching the shopping cart? Then I try to stay healthy by drinking lots of water and taking Vitamin C. When that fails, I panic a little bit: How will I take care of the kids? What if I pass it on to them? How can I cook dinner and not let the house fall apart?

When the cold has hit me full force I’m ready to make radical changes. I’ll start an exercise routine! I’ll drink eight glasses of water a day! I’ll go vegan! I’ll swear off sugar and caffeine – and I normally drink soda like it’s my job. I’ll promise myself anything to make sure I never feel like crap again.

The problem is I start feeling better and then quickly fall back into my regular routine, which excludes exercise – save for chasing around a 14 month old – and consists of a “mostly healthy diet” but with a lot of skipped meals and candy bars for snacks. I can’t help it. I’m busy. There isn’t always enough time to fix myself lunch and sit down and eat it.

I’m hoping this time will be different and when I get back on my feet I’ll actually adopt and keep a healthier lifestyle. I’ve already done a little online research into foods that help perk you up so I don’t use caffeine as a crutch. That’s at least a step in the right direction, isn’t it?

What do you do to stay healthy? Do you walk everyday? Take vitamins? Drink lots of juice? Practice deep breathing or skin detoxing? Leave a comment and let me know.

    I am a germ-a-phobic!!!

    I do whatever it takes to stay well because when I get a cold, I usually get bronchitis and then it turns into pneumonia…I HAVE ASTHMA

    So here are my tips:

    * wash hands frequently
    * do not touch face even if it itches
    * no fingers in mouth
    * always wash hands before eating
    * don’t touch food on plate except with fork if you can help it
    * spray with disinfectant spray
    * take Vitamin C every day and MEGA amounts if I get sick
    * a really good multivitamin
    * calcium because we are women!
    * if I get sick, I drink a weird heated drink

    If you have been sick that much, you need vitamins or stop touching your fact because the germs are finding their way into your body and having a party!

    I hope you feel better soon!

    Hey Red :) Great suggestions. I don’t get enough calcium and the only time I was good about taking a multivitamin was when I was pregnant. I must do better!

    My only “secret” is to drink plenty of fluids — all the time! I would also say to get plenty of rest, but since you have a 14-month-old and an almost 14-year-old I don’t know if “rest” is in your vocabulary. Write down some of your thoughts when you feel the worst — then review then when you are feeling better again. Maybe that is the inspiration you need!

    @Amber, Ooohhh! That is a good idea! I should write down what I’m thinking when I don’t feel good and look at it when I’m rested and healthy again. And you’re right – “rest” isn’t in my vocabulary!
