Happy Rednesday, Crayola Style

1903 Crayola crayon box

The first Crayola crayons were sold in an 8-count box in 1903 for a nickel.  They included the same colors sold in the 8-count box today: red, blue, yellow, green, violet, orange, black, and brown.

America’s favorite crayon color?  Blue.  Red makes it to #12 on the top 50 list.

These celebrities favor crayons in the red family:

Britney Spears – red
Courtney Cox – wild strawberry
Al Roker – burnt sienna
George W. Bush – magenta

What can you do with broken crayons?  You can make cute crafts like this:

Melt them in a double broiler.  (If you live in Phoenix just leave them outside for a little while.)  Or, you can melt them in the oven at 250 degrees.  Put them in muffin tins with foil wrappers and pour the melted crayons into candy molds.  You can mix up the colors for cool effects.

How do you get crayon out of a dryer?  Magic Eraser.  If that doesn’t work, lightly spray WD-40 on a soft rag and scrub it out.  Then you will need to use soap and warm water to get the WD-40 out of your dryer.  It will work on upholstery too… so I’ve heard.

Crayola displays the largest crayon in the world, which was made with crayons donated by children around the world to celebrate their 100th anniversary.  It weighs 1,500 pounds and is 15 feet long.  It is capable of coloring an entire football field.

Happy Rednesday!

So fun to see the vintage Crayola box!

Gosh I loved to color so much when I was little. Magenta was always my favorite. Thanks for all the memories.

I love crayons and I loved your post. Fun informastion about those little color sticks. I can’t believe red isn’t the number 1 color, though!

@Sally, I always loved to color too. I can’t remember if I had a favorite color. My sister’s was red so she probably hogged that crayon. :) I can’t wait for the days of my son’s crayon art hanging on my fridge!

@Leslie, I’m surprised too. Blue is not only #1, most of the top 10 colors are shades of blue.

Love the vintage crayon box. I think crayons will continue to stand the test of time as one of the all time favorite entertainments for children – ever!

@Chelise, yep, Rednesday is so much fun! I’m not crafty like most of the ladies but I still love coming up with “red” ideas. :)

Oh my, what interesting information! My favorite crayolas were in the blue, red and purple family. But then I don’t think I ever met a crayon color I didn’t like!

Fun post! I love all the names of colors on the crayons. Loved my box of 64 when I was a kid. Now my daughter has one with something like 144 or some huge amount.

Such a cute post! It’s been hot enough here in NC to melt crayons, too. Yuck.

Here is another great crayon craft that my kids used to love: Use a pencil sharpener to shave old crayon ends. Make designs with the shavings on a piece of waxed paper. Cover with another piece of waxed paper the same size. Cover the crayon sandwich with a cloth and iron on a medium setting until wax is melted. Let cool. Trim edges with pinking shears or craft scissors. These are especially cute taped to a window or slider that gets some sun; they look like stained glass. Enjoy.
